Finland Starts to Test 5G Network

A test network of 5G wireless communications started to operate on Thursday in Oulu, a northern city of Finland, local media reported.

The network is a joint project led by Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) and the University of Oulu, in cooperation with some industrial partners.

The first network is a restricted one conducted by VTT, and a public test environment in the University of Oulu will be launched in June, according to the report.

"Within the test network, we are researching and developing new technologies, based on which we will build a full 5G test network environment," Atso Hekkala, project manager of VTT, was quoted as saying.

The new generation technology is expected to take over the wireless data transfer field, as the current 3G and 4G networks are becoming overloaded, according to Hekkala.

VTT said earlier that the test environment will evolve into a full-scale 5G network and will hit the market by 2020.

The fifth generation wireless system denotes the next leap in wireless communications. It offers a high level of multimedia and cloud-based services, as well as user equipment and other network devices, while reducing material and energy consumption.

Currently, the European Union, Britain, China, Japan, South Korea and some other countries have invested heavily in developing the 5G network. So far, no telecommunications company or standard setting agency has mentioned 5G in their public specifications or official documents.
